for various reasons

to avoid serving the government
which is probably due to
different ideology /
doesn’t like the current government
and so on

offended some people or even the emperor
or get disappointed with the current system
and decided to quit and
stay in the mountain
and for some
who are not lucky enough to
persue the life of escapism
due to commitment etc
they would still
expressed their intention to do so
via their paintings / poems etc
