recently this topic of
Guangzhou surfaced and
due to a new acquaintance
out of nowhere I realized
the most important landmark is
actually missing from my
GuangZhou Travelogue, which
include as below:
Growing Tan X Learning Zen: GuangZhou, in Ten
Oriental Door X Italian Wall: Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall 中山紀念堂(廣州)
Buddhism Guard X Oriental Art: Five Hundred Arhats 五百羅漢
good thing doesn’t transient with time
let’s do a Monday throw-back
let’s explain the name
literally speaking
Chen: one of the most common surname, 陳
Clan: it’s a multi-purpose center for the Chens
Academy: including establishment of school
but somehow the Mandarin name
does not denote the exact meaning
Chen Jia Ci 陳家祠,
literally means
the family temple of the Chen
since the most important functions of
such clan-based centre is
for the memorial and worshiping of
the ancestors
both names, nevertheless
capture the function of the
center/temple/school
it survived the raid of
Cultural Revolution because
it was turned into a factory for
printing Maoist book
exterior
inside the academy
ain’t you feeling lucky that
it’s a hot summer day?
yeah definitely
photos always look better on a sunny day
on display
in other words
this is now also a museum
showcasing the local arts & crafts
in the Cantonese region
Chen Clan Academy a.k.a.
Chen Family Temple
is on top of the list of
must-visit for GuangZhou!
that’s for sure
