i don’t know
she suddenly popped up in my mind
midnight on the 1st of May
if there is one thing i am proud of
relating to my high school
then it must be finishing the 56 books
borrowed from the school library
at the peak
i can finish one book per day
including taking the risk of
reading it underneath the desk during classes
and by putting down the stories
in the reading report book
which is a compulsory weekly homework
but i did much much extra
it won me some reading prizes
for the sake of winning prizes
or for the sake of passing up homework
what some students did
was merely copying of the book synopsis
not to blame them
reading is a hobby
which some enjoy but others simply hate
i was just following
stories by stories
till i finished the shelves of Nancy Drew
thank goodness the collection in our library
is still complete
and i fought with no one to borrow it
then i ended up being a librarian
in order to enjoy the privilege of
borrowing four books instead of three
borrowing for two weeks term instead of one
it’s amazing
how much can i used to read
in spite of juggling school works, activities, extra classes
and what a shame that
i am not even reading one book per month
with the so-called advanced, portable ebook reader
coming back to Nancy Drew
all of a sudden
i found so many facts about the series
which i have never know
Nancy Drew was created by Edward Stratemeyer
The character first appeared in 1930.
The books have been ghostwritten by a number of authors
and are published under the collective pseudonym Carolyn Keene.
(i imagined Carolyn as an elegant smart lady)
who ever have ghostwritten the book
and i guess late Mr. Stratemeyer did not write much
because he passed away on 10th May, 1930
this is exactly the year Nancy Drew was first published
On top of the 56 of Nancy Drew Mystery Stories
it continued, published under a different company
from #57 to # 175
dated from 1979 to 2003
In the 1980s a new series was created,
The Nancy Drew Files,
which featured an older and more professional Nancy
as well as romantic plots
it runs from #1 to #124
up till 1997
The Nancy Drew Notebooks were aimed at younger readers
and featured a Nancy who was still in grade school.
The series was published from 1994 to 2005
with a total of 69 titles
In 1996
Nancy Drew and The Clue Crew
featuring the girls as eight year old girls
in the third grade at River Heights Elementary School,
and solving kid sized mysteries
there are a total of 31 books in the series
(i don’t fancy the cover much.. too cartoonized)
Nancy Drew on Campus was a series of
25 books published as a young adult spin-off
from the long-running series
between 1995 and 1998.
the series seems to focus on college life and romance,
rather than all solving mysteries
In 2004 a new series,
Girl Detective, was launched,
with an updated version of the character
who drives a hybrid electric vehicle and uses a cell phone.
Illustrations of the character have also evolved over time,
from portrayals of a fearless, active young woman
to a fearful or passive one. (why???)
it is still running,
with 46 books up-till-today
2005 – now
as an offshoot of the Girl Detective series
Nancy Drew graphic novels
(eeeewwww.. the illustration is like……)
guess what i found in the series
#20 High School Musical Mystery (February 2010)
#21 High School Musical Mystery Part II "The Lost Verse" (May 2010)
since Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys
are published under the same pseudonym
sometimes they crossover
won’t Ned get jealous about it?
i used to imagine what will happen
if Nancy is dating the boys
then i realize now
from the very first book cover
they have a pretty huge age gap, huh?
but you will never know
girls mature faster
and in the series to come
the boys are all grown-up and macho-looking
Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys Super Sleuths
(1981-1984)
volume 1 & 2
7 stories each
Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys Be a Detective Mystery Stories
(1984-1985) 6 titles in total
These titles feature a level of reader-interaction
Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys SuperMystery Series (1988–1998)
36 books in total
Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys Campfire Stories (1984)
Franklin W. Dixon
the pseudonym of the Hardy Boys series
is listed as co-author, along with Carolyn Keene
in the Supersleuths series and
Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys Campfire Stories (1984)
basically
this seems quite confusing
you will never know who is who
since both series have been ghostwritten
but just bear in mind that
both series were first created
by late Mr. Edward Stratemeyer
well
it’s already quite late
2 AM
and if i were to go on to talk about
Nancy Drew appearance in other form of media
i bet you will get tired scrolling
in short
Five, possibly six, feature films,
first few back in 1930’s
the latter adaption by Warner Bros on 2007
starring Emma Roberts
i bet you just see her recently
in theatre or at least on movie trailer
in Scream 4
and two television shows featuring Nancy Drew
during 1977-1989, by ABC
The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries
For the first season, episodes featuring Nancy
alternated with episodes featuring the Hardy Boys.
Beginning in the second season,
the format of the series changed
to focus more on the Hardy Boys,
with Nancy Drew primarily appearing
as a guest star in several crossover story lines;
The series continued for a third season
as The Hardy Boys Mysteries, dropping Nancy Drew completely.
the 2nd TV show during 1995
to be called
Nancy Drew & Daughter
the actress, Margot Kidder
was injured during filming of the first episode
when the brakes failed on the car she was driving
therefore the production was canceled
(bliss in disguise???… who wanna see Nancy with daughter)
and a TV film by ABC, 2002
not forgetting
have been produced to date
PC games
Nancy Drew Adventure (1998-)
25 in total
and Nancy Drew Dossier (2008-), two to date
and 5 titles on Nintendo DS
and coming to the conclusion
the image of Nancy Drew changed over
the different era
and some actually baffled me
especially the so-called Manga one
to me, the vintage look remains
the one and only
and nothing more
