Canine Couture: Snoopy and His Sister Belle Take New York Fashion Week by Storm text by Edward Barsamian via Vogue Almost 65 years ago, Charles M. Schulz introduced a beagle named Snoopy to the world. In over half a century of cartoons Snoopy has taken on the Red Baron during the first World War become an Olympic figure skater and was the first dog to fly solo across the Atlantic as, wait for it, the Lone Beagle. However, Snoopy and fashion have coexisted less frequently The most notable instance was thirty years ago with the 1984 exhibit “Snoopy in Fashion,” which debuted at the Seibu Art Forum in Tokyo. Partnered with his sister Belle, the black-and-white beagle accented his spots in distinguished ensembles from Gianni Versace, Gucci, and Oscar de la Renta as well as L.L. Bean, Missoni, and Oleg Cassini. Each designer created a personalized look for the duo from a Fendi fur coat to a Paco Rabanne chain mail dress. Fast forward to the present and the chic siblings took on New York Fashion Week Premiering at the New Museum’s Sky Room on September 8 “Snoopy & Belle In Fashion” is the modern day update of the beloved Peanuts characters who have embraced a spectrum of designs ranging from the minimal Calvin Klein Collection to the avant-garde (Rodarte) having worked with the CFDA. The exhibit will be traveling across the globe to other fashionable cities including Moscow, Paris, and Tokyo through 2016. |
